Everyone wants clarity from God, but most of us are drowning in confident voices that sound wise, spiritual, and shareable. We start by naming the uncomfortable truth: none of us is neutral. Our feeds, our friend groups, our politics, and even our favorite “Christian” thinkers can reinforce what we already want to believe. So how do we actually hear God, and how do we spot what’s forming us without our consent?

We open 1 John 4:1-6 and take John’s command seriously: “test the spirits.” That doesn’t mean living scared, hunting for demons in every song or movie. It means anchoring our discernment in the real Jesus. John points to a core Christian doctrine, the incarnation of Jesus Christ: God the Son truly came in the flesh. We talk about why that belief isn’t a side issue. The incarnation shows us what God is like, proves God enters our suffering, and connects directly to salvation through Jesus’ resurrection, not our self-improvement.

Then we bring it down to everyday life with two powerful forces that shape our judgment: cognitive dissonance and confirmation bias. We explain why self-deception is so convincing, and how the Holy Spirit guides us toward truth by pointing us back to Christ, not by rubber-stamping our strongest feelings. To practice spiritual discernment this week, we offer three questions you can use immediately: Is it consistent with Jesus? Is it grounded in Scripture in context? What is it forming in me?
